Celebrating Motherhood in Rebecca's Work

For decades, Rebecca has painted mothers – and their breastfed babies and warmly held kids. It has been one of her most enduring images and one of the most instantly recognisable themes in her work. Today, being Mother’s Day in Australia, I wanted to share some images of Rebecca’s works which touched on motherhood in a variety of mediums.

Here are some older paintings from 2013 and 2014 respectively:

Rebecca has long been known for mugs, and though she doesn’t hand paint them much anymore (such small detail painting is very trying on the hands when done a lot), they’re still available in another form as mugs made for the Australian Breastfeeding Association, which can be purchased through their website here. Rebecca has produced numerous designs for them, of which a design for their 60th anniversary is available, as well as other merchandise. All proceeds from their sales go to the ABA.

I found this old broach in a drawer when I was last staying with my mum. I asked to keep it and it's since been a good-luck charm in my wardrobe. I like the delicateness of it, the soft pinks, the loving gaze, the contented baby.

For this Mother's Day this year Rebecca produced a collection of paintings, on both canvas and paper, which can be found here
